The First Grade Team will be posting a Learning Choice Board on Sunday night each week. You can access the board on our class web page at Dr. Jacks will also be sending out an e-mail tonight that includes the boards for each grade level.

The choice boards will have optional learning activities for reading, writing, math, science/social studies. It will also have links to the Encore and Resource teachers’ web pages which will have suggested activities for your child as well. These activities will be review of content that was taught this year in the classroom. We have provided you with enough options for your child to do something in every subject area Monday through Friday. However, this is meant to be a resource for families and is not meant to be overwhelming. As it is an optional choice board, you can choose to do whatever suits the needs of your family.

While the board will change each week, “Drop Everything and Read” will remain as we believe it is the most important learning opportunity for your child. During “Drop Everything and Read,” please have your child read independently for at least 15-30 minutes. The work from the choice board activities will not be collected or graded, but please feel free to share any pictures of your child enjoying their learning!

At the bottom of the Learning Choice Board, there will be a school-wide Weekly Challenge. The challenges will involve posting a picture of your child on Twitter or Facebook using #AshlandSOAR. I’m looking forward to seeing your child having fun with this!

Here is a list of the Standards of Learning for first grade. The highlighted standards and objectives are ones that we did not get to cover before school closed. As of right now, there will be no instruction on new material (highlighted standards/objectives) and all optional learning opportunities will be review of previously taught standards.

I wanted to encourage you to check out the county's site of optional home learning resources. The site has schedules with links to movement, art, and quiet time activities. It also has optional academic activities that are organized by content area. The home learning site learning links organized by content area as well. There are some great resources and suggestions and the site is very user friendly! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Classroom Expectations:
1. Be respectful.
2. Be responsible.
3. Be ready to learn.
4. Be really safe.

Goals of a Responsive Classroom Approach to Discipline:

  • Establish a calm, orderly, predictable, and safe environment
  • Teach children positive behavior skills so they develop self-control and self-discipline
  • Guide children to become responsible, contributing members of their classroom, school, and community
  • Promote respectful, kind, and healthy teacher-to-student, and student- to-student interactions

When responding to misbehavior, I use cues, proximity, specific language (reminding, redirecting, and reinforcing), and logical consequences.
