The Qualcomm Think-a-Bit Lab Field Trip was a great experience. We got to travel to the Virginia Tech Campus in Falls Church, VA. All fifth grade classes  got to go. We got to do three fun activities. The first one was talking about future careers and what degrees you would have to earn for those careers. Then we got to program some circuits and a LED light. The third activity was creating a robot  to sit on top of a wheel and spin around.  You could decorate it with materials from the giant craft wall. Overall the lessons seemed well planned out and we had a great time.

My thoughts on the book fair are that there were a good variety of books. The books they choose to sell were very good. It was very organized and the books were easy to find. There were also cookies. The cookies were amazing! They had plenty for everyone which was wonderful. The pumpkin patch had large pumpkins. They had enough pumpkins for everyone who ordered them. There was also a face painting table. The face painting table was run by Girl Scout troop 908. The face painting was fantastic and they painted whatever the kids wanted to be for Halloween. Overall, the Fall Social was a huge success!

Field day this year is going to be wacky Olympic themed. The field day will take place on the playground and in the bus loop this year. This year our field day will be Friday, October 28. The options you have for field day are silly equipment with a little twist. Since it is wacky there will not be a game of basketball. We are going to have wacky rules. Mrs. Swanson keeps researching ideas and brainstorming. Many people ask, "why is it in fall this year?" Well, Mr. Jacks liked it because students are not taking SOL tests. Field day this year will have Olympic style games... but this time it will be wacky! Students, get ready for an awesome field day!

The Lego League is a county organization that competes in Lego missions.Their meetings are Wednesday afternoons and Monday mornings. Mrs. Deintinis says "The purpose of the Lego League is to encourage kids to work as a team to help animals. The Robotics club is more of a coding-obstacle course kind of thing, but I think the Lego League deals with more real-life problems". Reporter Madison Watt asks," Why did you want to run the Lego League?"Mrs. Dientenis says, " Well, I worked with Lego before, and I wanted to let kids of all ages do that to.". You heard it here first, people! So come on down in November and cheer for the Ashland Elementary Lego League!

Student Council is the new program that replaced Student Leaders. Mrs.Vohar, the school counselor is in charge of the program. Mrs.Vohar is planning to do this next year so other students will have a chance to run. The fifth grade team at Ashland has decided to do student council so students will have more responsibility and teacher recommendations. They have to make posters and really want to do this. Mrs.Vohar has done this at other schools like Sinclair and Yorkshire Elementary. As a student she participated in student council in middle and high school. She ran for student council in high school because she wanted to make a difference. Our new Student Council President, Alyssa Kiffer is very excited to be a part of the Ashland Student Council. Alyssa ran because she wanted to make a difference in bullying and acceptance in our school. She also wants to help people make new friends and get a long with everyone!
